Over Time, this page will list a wide variety of stories on almost any topic somehow related to sailing, boating, or canoe/kayaking.

The Storm   --  This is a short story about a beautiful day on the water, participating in a large, public, and crowded event, when the weather suddenly and unexpectedly turns extremely ugly and dangerous.  It is the first-hand account of what happened, how they survived without injury, and how it could have been done better.  It may be a little frightening to some, but it contains excellent advice and demonstrates how boaters can deal with those events in boating that that can be life-threatening.  Fortunately, that type of event is both rare and CAN be dealt with safely.

It Was a Wild Ride...  The story of one of the couple of hundred boats that participated in the 2005 Dauphin Island Race, a highly popular 18-mile run from the upper reaches of Mobile Bay (AL) down to a finish line near the coastal barrier island known as Dauphin Island.

Fall Colors Cruise 2006  Sailors on several boats get together to hold the "first annual" fall colors cruise in the North Georgia hills.  The weather wasn't exactly perfect, but a wonderful time was had by all.  A good example of how a short, simple cruise can be a soul-satisfying experience.
Note: This is a fairly long story with a number of large pictures.  It may take a while to load.

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time…

You understand now why you came this way.

'Cause the truth you might be running from is so small,

but it's (the Southern Cross is) as big as the promise,

the promise of a comin' day.       Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young   Atlantic Records “Southern Cross”

The song gets it right.

The first time you see the Southern Cross, huge and bold above you, is something you never forget.

This is a short story about what happens to a sailor who suddenly and dramatically sees The Southern Cross... for the first time.
