The following books have been reviewed by members of the SailingIsLife staff. While we try to be objective,
obviously our personal feelings and insights about the books are a part of the review. These books may be instructional,
entertaining, humorous, opinionated, useful, delightful, useful for inducing sleep, or some combination of the above.
Of course, all are somehow related to sail boats, power boats, paddle boats, and/or just spending time on the water.
Happy reading!

First You Have to Row a Little Boat - Richard Bode
"For the truth is that I already know as much about my fate as I need to know. The day will come when I will
die. So the only matter of consequence before me is what I will do with my allotted time. I can remain on shore, paralyzed
with fear, or I can raise my sails and dip and soar in the breeze."
This is one of the best and most effective "inspirational" books I have ever seen. It is written by a man
looking back at his childhood and using the lessons of sailing as a metaphor for the lessons of life. The sailing images
are sometimes painful, often beautiful, and always educational and inspiring. Even if you are not a sailor, this book
will entertain you, affect you deeply, and teach much about life. This is one of those rare books that is not only worth reading...
but worth reading again.

Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach
A Philosophic & Practical Approach To Cruising
By Don Casey & Lew Hackler
OR, Just read the introductory review below:
This book manages to be intriguing, instructional, useful, and highly entertaining all at the same time.
My personal copy is dog-eared, worn, more than a bit ragged around the edges. Some of the pages are loose. It
is obvious it is a beloved book that has been read numerous times. It is one of those books I sometimes pull out for
reference, and sometimes pull out simply to enjoy reading it again.

Handbook of Trailer Sailing - Robert F. Burgess
-OR- just read our quick review below:
This is the book that started it all, for me at least.
In the publisher's description, they note that the book, "bursts with detailed information on finding your dream
boat, outfitting and setting up, trailers and trailering, elementary and advanced sailing, anchoring, customizing for comfort,
sail camping, cruise planning, and much more. All through the eyes of a lifelong small-boat sailor with a love for the
sport and the freedom it brings".
